The terms "introvert" and "extrovert" were coined in the 1920s by Carl Jung. Brain imaging and neuroscientific research have significantly deepened our understanding since.
In its simplest terms, introversion means two things:
- Needing time alone - or away from stimulation - to recharge. More dopamine receptors mean noise, lights and people can result in overstimulation.
- Needing time to process thought, with a preference for introspection over immediate action. This is linked to a larger pre-frontal cortex and longer neural pathways.
Being shy, socially anxious, lacking confidence or anti-social are not caused by introversion. They're separate traits - and it's the confusion between them that feeds most of the negative misconceptions.
